Distance and Community has influenced my interpretation of ishi. Our search for community, a sense of belonging, in unfamiliar terrains has always intrigued me. It maybe because I too am a byproduct of this longing. For me, ishi is my excuse to initiate conversations I’ve been curious about and ask questions I was too scared to ask.

ishi, to me, is like that one old friend/group of friends who you get to meet every once in a while yet you somehow remain just as close; that one friend/group with whom the most mundane is the most interesting.

ishi has been a personal journey for me to understand the intricacies and quirks of my own community. As a modern woman who grew up away from the origins of my family, I understood my own culture often as an outsider. I have been revisiting my community and the narratives of my people to newly appreciate my own culture. Trying to instill that sense of belongingness I acknowledge how distinct the new world ideology and privilege I grew up with makes me from my community.

My grandmother was a skilled weaver and a good storyteller. Her stories had a tinge of real-life experiences and so much of how the community evolved over time. Today, I neither know how to weave or remember any of her stories. I had lost grip of this richness of culture but ishi has restored this sense of loss for me and has brought me closer to home in terms of reshaping my thought process, identifying cultural narratives and all in all, strengthening my belief in my culture as the greatest base of my identity.

✹ Team ishi is an ever-growing group of four ✹ Four different lives and experiences connected by our shared interest in creating a space that is not only friendly but informational ✹ Separated by distance and responsibilities of our own, Gmeet, Google Docs and Whatsapp group chat are our usual hangout spots ✹

✹ Of the many challenges as a group of once-strangers connecting online to curate a friendly space and magazine, one that remains the most exciting is the constant push to understand where each of us is coming from in terms of our ideas and expressions ✹ If the curation of this magazine is any success, it is only the result of learning to find a common ground ✹ We rejoice in the fact that we are learning ✹

✹ We have come to know that the team is each other’s place of inquiry and discovery ✹ We look forward to long group hugs and sitting down at a table together over food to pick up the many conversations cut short by unstable internet connectivity ✹

✹ Till then, join us in celebrating the launch of our second issue ✹We present to you, “milk tea or red tea? ”, issue02 of ishi ✹ While you read and send us your feedback, we will help ourselves with a cup of tea and go out for a walk ✹ See you soon! ✹

✹ Before we sign off, we have worked with many people over the last six months to make this issue a possible reality ✹ Exhausting, but worth the experience ✹ We hope to hear/ read more from you in the coming months ✹ You can be a part of ishi in many ways ✹ We accept entrees ✹ Write to us to find out more︎︎︎  ✹
